Holiday Entertaining Tips by Colin Cowie
Open your house: If you want to show people your real sense of style, open your house to them. The key is to set everything up the night before. That way, on the day of the party you just have to put food and drinks out, and you still have time to shower and change. Dress up. If you’re a hostess, buy new shoes and a lipstick, and put your hair up. A gracious host is unflustered and has a great story to tell.
Identify your style: When decorating, keep a thread of style by identifying your look and color. Have it run from the wreath on the front door to the garland over your fireplace or stair banister to the focal point, bringing it to your tree and keeping it going on your dining table.
Create ambiance with candles: Create a fun and inviting atmosphere for you and your guests with festive music, dimmed lights and candles. Candles are the most important tool when it comes to decorating. The more, the better. Make a tablescape on your coffee table and mix tapers with columns and votives. It’s instant ambiance that makes all your guests look good.
Mix the music: Make a playlist of your favorite tunes and mix in about 20% of holiday music so you will have the right mix of current favorites and holiday music… or "Santa Baby" will be driving you crazy!!!
Present a special touch: Make something unique for your guests by serving a specialty cocktail – you can save time by preparing a few pitchers before the party. Sending guests home with a baked delight is personal and totally affordable. Make a bag of your famous homemade cookies and include the recipe!
